In today’s digital world, even the smallest business can be a target for cybercrime. With online threats continuing to rise, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is urging small businesses across the UK — including London’s many sole traders and limited companies — to take simple, practical steps to protect themselves.

To make that easier, the NCSC has launched a new Cyber Action Toolkit, designed specifically to help small organisations strengthen their cyber defences without the jargon or complexity.

Why Cybersecurity Matters for Small Businesses

According to recent figures, 42% of small businesses in the UK reported experiencing a cyber breach in 2024, and over a third of microbusinesses faced phishing attempts. Yet many business owners admit they’re unsure where to begin when it comes to cyber protection — often because it feels too technical or time-consuming.

The NCSC’s CEO, Dr Richard Horne, has urged all organisations to “act now,” warning that any business with digital assets is a potential target.

What the Cyber Action Toolkit Offers

The Cyber Action Toolkit provides free, easy-to-follow guidance tailored to your business size and needs. It breaks cybersecurity down into simple, achievable actions — no specialist knowledge required.

Here’s what it includes:

  • Personalised guidance to help you identify your key risks
  • Step-by-step actions matched to your business’s scale and sector
  • Progress tracking and recognition for each improvement you make

The toolkit is structured across three levels — Foundation, Improver, and Enhanced — allowing you to strengthen your defences gradually and at your own pace.

For many small businesses, following the Toolkit’s recommendations can also serve as a stepping stone towards achieving Cyber Essentials certification, which helps demonstrate your commitment to data security.

A Practical First Step

For busy business owners, cybersecurity can easily slip down the to-do list — but taking a few minutes now to complete the Toolkit could prevent serious disruption later. From protecting client data to safeguarding your financial systems, small improvements can make a big difference.

You can access the Cyber Action Toolkit for free via the NCSC website.
