As the 2025/26 tax year draws to a close, employers should start preparing for the key payroll tasks that come with the transition into a new tax year.

If you run a payroll, there are a few important steps to complete to ensure you remain compliant with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) requirements. The current tax year ends on 5 April 2026, and the new tax year begins on 6 April 2026.

Planning ahead can make the process much smoother and help avoid any last-minute issues.

Key Payroll Tasks for the End of the Tax Year

Below are some of the key actions employers need to complete:

Submit your final payroll report of the year
Your final Full Payment Submission (FPS) for the 2025/26 tax year must be sent to HMRC on or before your employees’ final payday of the tax year.

Update payroll software and employee records
From 6 April, ensure your payroll software is updated for the new tax year and that employee payroll records reflect the latest tax codes, thresholds, and any legislative changes.

Provide employees with their P60 forms
Employees must receive their P60, which summarises their total pay and deductions for the tax year, by 31 May 2026.

Report employee expenses and benefits
If you provide employees with expenses or benefits, these must be reported to HMRC by 6 July 2026.
