The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the UK unemployment rate increased to 5.0% in the three months to March 2026, up slightly from 4.9% in the previous reporting period.

Alongside the rise in unemployment, vacancies have continued to decline and wage growth has shown signs of easing. Taken together, these indicators suggest that the labour market may be losing momentum after a prolonged period of resilience.

Economists are closely monitoring the situation, with some pointing to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East as a factor contributing to growing uncertainty for businesses and employers.

In more positive news, inflation fell to 2.8% in the year to April 2026, down from 3.3% in March. The decrease was driven largely by lower household energy costs, with reductions in gas and electricity prices helping to ease pressure on consumers.

However, the outlook remains uncertain. Many analysts believe inflation could begin to rise again over the coming months as the wider economic effects of the Middle East conflict feed through into global energy markets and supply chains. Some forecasts suggest inflation could climb back towards 4% by the end of the year.

Ordinarily, a combination of softer wage growth and rising unemployment would strengthen expectations of an interest rate cut from the Bank of England. However, with inflation risks still present, policymakers may be reluctant to lower rates too quickly.

The Bank of England’s next interest rate decision is scheduled for 18 June 2026, and businesses will be watching closely for any indication of the Bank’s outlook on inflation and economic growth.

For business owners, the current environment highlights the importance of careful financial planning. While easing inflation may provide some relief from cost pressures, uncertainty around interest rates, consumer spending and employment trends means that maintaining strong cash flow management and up-to-date financial forecasting remains essential.
